Where on Earth...Kruger National Park

Enter the Kruger
National Park at Phunda Maria, which is a beautiful,
quiet, elephant infested area of the reserve.
Where crocodiles
laze on the banks of the
Limpopo River
at the confluence of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, is a
strangely evocative place, haunted by the legendary ivory hunter
Cecil Barnard and later TV Bulpin.
Cecil Barnard hid on
an island in the middle of the Limpopo in the 1920s to avoid being
tracked down by pursuing rangers and police. Ironically Barnard
later mended his wayward life and became a ranger himself.
The campsite is totally under the shade of very tall trees,
completely sheltering this area - so ideal all year round. One side
of it is totally open of any trees or bush, the riverside so it
will allow a hopeful breeze.
Malaria precautions Highly recommended |

Nearby your campsite, 10 years ago, while
on patrol ranger Philip Nel stumbled across a few rocks stacked
upon each other on the top of Thulamela Hill and
discovered possibly the most interesting archaeological site in
the Kruger Park. Dating back to around 1200 AD, the ruins are
believed to be the remains of a late-Iron-Age settlement. The
tribe's royal family reigned from this vantage point on a hill
above the
Luvuvha River,
where the stone-walled settlement has been reconstructed. The
awesome view from what was then the chief's room, takes in the
Luvuvha, the
Limpopo River
and into Zimbabwe in the north and Mozambique in
the east. |
